Aga Oven Door Rope Seals

Tuesday 1st May 2001

Recently there has been a review of the provision of a cut-out on the lower oven door rope-seals, and its affects on oven venting performance. Currently no cut-out is provided on any model.

Some cookers previously had cut-outs on their lower oven door rope-seals, when they had been originally fitted with the shallow door lining. However with the standardised use of a deep door lining on the lower oven on both gas and oil cookers, the situation has been reviewed and a cut-out will be re-introduced as follows. This is intended to provide a path for relief air to enter into the bottom oven and subsequently pass through into the roasting oven to assist with the oven venting, particularly where the natural flue draught is low.

On future oil-fired and all Gas-fired cookers, the door to the lower Simmering/Baking oven, will have its rope seal cut away for a distance of about 25mm, on the vertical side between the door hinges. When replacing a rope or renewing a door, please ensure that the gap is maintained between the hinges, not on the bottom edge, otherwise condensation could drip out.

The exception is the Electric model, which has no need for a gap in the rope-seal, due to its fan assisted, oven venting arrangements..

When a rope is cut to length to make a new seal, its loose ends should be bound-in using heat resistant fibre tape, to give a neat finish. Supplies of this tape can be ordered using part number A1902. JTHR 20387. Doors without a gap have a rope length of 1230mm, the others requiring a length of 1205mm.
